Rakuten, Inc.
Rakuten has broadly expanded its business into such areas as the EC business represented by “Rakuten Market”, Japan’s largest online shopping mall, the travel business with “Rakuten Travel”, the portal and media business, the financial business with “Rakuten Securities” and the “Rakuten Card”, and they are even moving into the professional sports business with the operation of the pro baseball team “Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles” and the development and sales of related merchandise.

Open source monitoring software. It watches systems and applications to know the status of any element of those systems. It can detect when a network interface is down, defacement of websites, memory leaks in server applications, and sends a message when your systems fails.
Background
The services provided by Rakuten operate on a powerful sharing system infrastructure made up of thousands of servers. To provide stable services, they require not only a powerful system infrastructure, but a system that can immediately respond when a failure occurs.
The old monitoring system primarily performed alive monitoring, but the monitored nodes and the number of monitored items increases with the addition of each new service. In their past operations, this is an increase of around 20 to 30% yearly, and it exceeds 10,000 in a ten year period. However, those numbers were estimated to grow even further with no end to the addition of services and accompanying the progression to a virtualized and cloud-based common system infrastructure. The growth in costs finally developed into a large business issue and an advanced monitoring structure was demanded to respond to the expansion of business scale at low cost.
There are five determining criteria that were focused on in the system renewal: “Installation and running costs”, “Ease of transitioning monitoring configuration”, “Redundant configuration availability”, “Succession of the operational process for the current environment including the configured monitored items”, “Application of monitored items to add in the future”. Cost reductions were naturally required, but a redundant configuration was a necessary condition as a monitoring infrastructure, and in order to reduce the burden on the operator, the new system was also required to easily take over the content monitored by the old monitoring system.
Why Pandora?
The deciding factor was Pandora was superior to the competitors products in all conditions (the cost reduction effect was highly evaluated).

Pandora is open source commercial software, but compared to other open source software, the service level is high, and it is an innovative product that can maintain monitoring system redundancy. When you reach the size of Rakuten, redundancy and flexibility are important, so we feel Pandora is an excellent match.”
